What is a Root Cellar?

FoodStorageIf you are in the process of finding your homestead and you stumble across a home with a Root Cellar, don’t dismiss it, this is something that can be of great use.  A root cellar is a structure that is usually underground or at least partially and used to store vegetables, fruits, nuts and other foods.  It is meant to keep foods at a certain temperature and humidity.  It also helps to keep the food from freezing during the winter and cool during the summer months.  So if you are looking into alternative ways to store food without having to use electricity, then this could be an option.  In the fall you can store your root vegetables such as potatoes over the winter.

Here is a list of other foods you can store in the root cellar:

  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Onions
  • Canned jams and preserves
  • Winter Squash
  • Cabbage
  • Apples

Below is an excellent chart I found from an article called “The fundamentals of Root Cellaring” from Mother Earth news.com.  To learn more about root cellars, click on the article link.
