How Many Quails Does It Take

quaileggsIf you are thinking of breeding quail, here are a few things to know.  Breeder quails should have 1 square foot per bird in their cage.  For a grow out pen you could have about 3 birds per square foot. Quail hens start to lay eggs between 6 to 8 weeks. It takes about 3 quail eggs to equal 1 chicken egg.  But just how many quails would it take for a family of four to have quail meat once a week?  Here are some estimates from the video below.

  • 18 egg laying hens
  • 12 Eggs per day X 7 Days = 84 Eggs
  • 70% Hatch Rate = 58 chicks
  • 5% Loss = 55 Chicks
  • 6 Quail per meal = 9 Meals
  • 54 meals/year
